Obituary for Billy G. Workman

Billy G. Workman, age 87 of Pruntytown Pike, Grafton, WV passed away Saturday, August 09, 2014 at his residence. He was born July 28, 1927 in Simpson, WV a son of the late Alvin and Hazel Marie (Hart) Workman.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Lola Jean (Helmick) Workman; three sons, Randy T. Workman and companion, Donna Phillips, of Grafton, Rodney S. Workman and wife, Beverly, of Jacksonville, FL, and Mark E. Workman and wife, Jenny, also of Grafton; eight grandchildren, Billie Jean Workman of Grafton, Michael B. Workman of Bridgeport, Weston M. Workman of Grafton, Brant K. Workman of Bradshaw, WV, Steffyn R. Workman of Atlanta, GA, Evan B. Workman of Jacksonville, FL, Anna Stallings of Grafton, and Jennifer Shay of Biloxi, MS; six great grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild; also survived by several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Dave Workman and two sisters, Sara Marie Archer and Violet Dean Poe.
He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Bill attended Flemington High School then served in the US Army during World War II in the Medical Unit. He served the City of Grafton, working in various positions in the city government, retiring in 1988 as Fire Chief after 17 years. He served on the Grafton City Council for several terms and was known throughout the community for his commitment to recreation and to the improvements of the city of Grafton. He was a former member of the Grafton Kiwanis club and the Firemen’s Association.
Bill loved his family, golfing, hunting, and fishing. He was Methodist by faith.

The family will receive friends at the Donald G. Ford Funeral Home in Grafton on Monday, August 11th from 2:00-8:00 p.m. and from 10:00 a.m. until the funeral hour on Tuesday.
Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday, August 12, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Bert Coffman officiating.
Interment will follow at the WV National Cemetery in Pruntytown.
Military graveside services will be conducted by the Taylor County Honor Guard and the WV Army National Guard of Kingwood.
