Obituary for James Denzil Kerns

James D. Kerns, age 91 of McVicker Road (Pleasant Creek Community), Philippi, WV passed away Monday, January 18, 2016 at his residence.
He was born January 10, 1925 in Pleasant Creek, a son of the late James Bruce and Hester (McIntosh) Kerns.

James is survived by his wife of 68 years, Rosalie (Taylor) Kerns; four children, Carol Lee Skiles of Philippi, Roger B. Kerns of Barbour County, Pamela S. Brown of Belpre, OH, and Richard D. Kerns and wife, Debbie of Coolville, OH; eleven grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; eight step great-grandchildren; one step great-great-grandson; also survived by several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Gary Brown; one great-grandson, Chais Jones; three sisters, Mabel Mitchell, Rebecca Neal, and Layla Bolyard and two brothers, Dorsey Kerns and Charles Edward Kerns, who died in infancy.

Jim was a graduate of Grafton High School with the Class of 1943 and was a veteran of WWII serving in the US Army. He was an agent for Kemper Life Insurance from 1963-1969; was the Superintendent at the WV Industrial School for Boys from 1969-1975; the WV Dept. of Highways, and the Taylor County Board of Education from 1962-1969.

He was a 50 year member of the Grafton Lodge 15 AF&AM; member of the Demolay Chapter 12 Knights Templer; R.A.M. Chapter 11; Osisris Temple of Wheeling; VFW Memorial City Post 3081; the Grafton Rotary Club and the Taylor County Color Guard.
He also was an avid farmer and enjoyed his family, hunting and fishing.

The family will receive friends at the Donald G. Ford Funeral Home in Grafton on Wednesday, January 20th from 3:00-8:00 p.m. and from 10:00 a.m. until the funeral hour on Thursday.
Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Thursday, January 21, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. David Daughtery and Gina Stewart officiating.
Interment will follow at the WV National Cemetery in Pruntytown.
Military graveside services will be conducted by the Taylor County Honor Guard and the WV Army National Guard from Kingwood.
Masonic graveside service will be conducted by Grafton Lodge 15 AF&AM.
