Obituary for John Joseph McKinney Sr.

Rev. John J. McKinney Sr. age 81 of Beckley, WV (formerly of Flemington, WV) passed away at the Veteran’s Hospital in Beckley on Thursday June 5, 2014.

He was born on February 8, 1933 in Rosemont, WV. He was the son of the late Goff McKinney Jr. and Nellie May (Tierney) McKinney.

He is survived by four children; Diana Kay Oswald and husband Jack Oswald of Beckley, WV, John Joseph McKinney Jr. and wife Debbie McKinney of Grafton, WV, Charlene Geiger of Morgantown, WV, and Sharri Brake of Bridgeport, WV ; nine grandchildren and several great grandchildren; three sisters, Madge Hennen of Good Hope, WV, Annabelle Hostler of Grafton, WV, and Deborah Welch and husband Jerry of Flemington, WV; two brothers,Thomas Ray McKinney and wife Donnice of Flemington, WV, and Paul Gary McKinney and wife Kay of Grafton, WV; also survived by several nieces and nephews.

John was preceded in death by his first wife Carol (Shaffer) McKinney, his second wife Mary (Bennett) McKinney; one sister, Mary DeCampli, and one brother, Robert William Mckinney.

John was a Veteran of the U.S. Marine Corp. serving his country for eight years. He was a retired coal miner and former minister of the Assembly of God Churches, where he worked for twenty eight years.

The family will receive friends at the Donald G. Ford Funeral Home in Grafton on Sunday, June 8, 2014 from 4:00 -8:00 pm and from 10:00 am until the funeral hour on Monday.

Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Monday June 9, 2014 at 11:00 am with Pastor Johnny Whitehair officiating.
Interment will follow at the Simpson Cemetery.
Military graveside services will be conducted by the Taylor County Honor Guard.

At the family’s request donations can be made to the VA Medical Center Hospice in Beckley at William Boyd 200 Veterans Drive Beckley, WV 25801.
