Harry Franciscus Newcome passed into eternal life on Saturday, April 26, 2014, at the age of 94. He was born February 12, 1920, in Preston County, son of Madge (Fisher) Newcome and Earl Newcome. He would be the first to tell you he lived a good life and made many wonderful friends throughout his 94 years. He had a brilliant sense of humor and everyone who met him was amazed by the wit and knowledge he displayed in his later years. Those who were fortunate enough to have had a conversation with him, always reflected on his words and took away a piece of his wisdom. His memory was incredible and even in the recent past, he would see someone and remember their name and where they used to work, usually people he hadn't seen for 20-30 years.
He was an honest man who expected nothing less from his family. He was kind, loving, and caring up until the end.
He is survived by one daughter, Rebecca A. Vincent (William) of Grafton; one grandson, John F. Vincent (Lisa) of Albright, WV; one granddaughter, Sarah M. Atkins (Matthew) of Fairmont; one great grandson, Connor A. Atkins; and one great-granddaughter, Ella Grace Atkins; also survived by several nieces and nephews.
He was a graduate of Newburg High School with the Class of 1938. At the age of 22, he was called into the U.S. Army and served as a proud veteran of World War II, serving in the 773rd Amphibian Tractor Battalion from 1942-1945. His grandchildren and nieces and nephews loved to hear the stories about this time of his life and he always had a new story to tell.
He was the oldest member of the Boothsville United Methodist Church, having been a member since 1959 and he served as church treasurer for 18 years.
He was retired from the United Parcel Service where he worked as a mechanic for 11 years, retiring in 1982. He could still recite the truck numbers from memory and knew exactly which driver drove each truck. Prior to that, he worked as a mechanic for Wilson Ford for 25 plus years.
He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Gertrude Newcome, in 1994; two sisters, Georgia Rogers and Virginia Glaspell and two brothers Charles (Bill) Newcome and Ralph Newcome.
Friends will be received at the Donald G. Ford Funeral Home , Route 50 W., Grafton, from 3:00-8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 29th and from 10:00 a.m. until the funeral hour on Wednesday.
Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday, April 30, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Michael Richards officiating. Interment will follow at the Woodsdale Memorial Park Cemetery in Grafton.
Military graveside services will be conducted by the Taylor County Honor Guard and the WV Army National Guard of Kingwood.
