Obituary for Harry Elbert Baker

Harry Elbert Baker, age 78 of Wendel Road, Grafton, WV passed away Thursday, February 27th, 2020 surrounded by his family. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather.
Harry was born December 1st, 1941 in Grafton, WV to Harry Linward Baker and Lovie Dale (Simmons) Aldridge Baker. In 1963 Nancy Bell (Hunt) Baker became his wife and life long best friend. On February the 9th, 2020 they celebrated their 57th anniversary together.
Harry is survived by his wife, Nancy Baker. Three children, Donna Towner and husband Larry Towner of Grafton, James Baker and wife Katrina Baker of Grafton, and Elaine Gilbert and husband Byron Gilbert of Grafton. Brother in Law, Paul McDaniel. He is also survived by eight grandchildren, Amanda Zebley (husband Keith), Cassie Towner, Joshua Baker (wife Brittany), Jessicca Baker, Jonathan Gilbert, Hannah Gilbert, Callie Gilbert, and Emma Gilbert. One great grandson, Levi Baker, with two more blessings on the way. Friends whom became family Nick Carder, Bob and Camilla Gawthrop, and Bev McDonald.
He was proceeded in death by parents, Harry L. and Lovie Baker, a sister, Barbara McDaniel, and infant daughter, Kathy Dale Baker.
Harry was a member of the Harmony Grove Baptist Church and served as a Deacon. He loved being a messenger of God’s word. He would always say, “I’d rather be fishing”. His past time included riding horses, camping, fishing, gardening, and working his family farm. He was known by many as a “Fish Hog”. He spent countless hours with his lifelong best friend, Nick Carder who stood by him until the very end. He was a 40 year member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and had just received his recognition. He graduated Grafton High School in 1959. He worked as a carpenter, mechanic, professional car tinkler, and had his own farm equipment business “Baker Machinery” for several years. He was a man who could fix anything, and was always willing to lend a hand.
Services for Harry Baker have been entrusted to Donald G. Ford’s Funeral Home. The Family will receive friends on Sunday March 1st, 2020 from 5-8 pm and from 10-12 noon on March 2nd, 2020. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Monday, March 2nd at 12:00 pm with Pastor Samuel Myers officiating. Interment will follow at the Middleville Baptist Cemetery.
