Obituary for Gerald R. Spiker Sr.

Gerald Richard Spiker, 90 of Grafton, WV, passed away on Saturday, July 30th 2022. He was born in Bayard, WV on April 25th, 1932. A son of the late Vernon & Eithel Spiker. He was preceded in death by his wife of 39 years, Carole (Quimby) Spiker. In addition to his first wife and mother of 7 of his children, Vera (Welch) Spiker.

In addition to his parents and wife, Mr. Spiker was proceeded in death by one son: Andrew Spiker. As well as two granddaughters; Bekah Fleming & Abigail Spiker.

Mr. Spiker is survived by his ten children: Barbara Mochan (Mike) of Wall, PA, Clarence Spiker (Jessie) of Romney, WV, Sandra Fleming (Chuck) of Salisbury, MD, Patricia Fleming (John) of Allen, MD, Katherine Spiker of Seaford, DE, Nancy Frey (Ric) of Seaford, DE, Gerald Spiker (Brandy) of Moatsville, WV, William Spiker (Heather) of Grafton, WV, Kimberly Spiker & Matthew Spiker (Cat) of Fairmont, WV; Three siblings: Leonard Spiker (Peggy) of Elk Garden, WV, Anna Myers (Don) of Romney, WV, Donna Hammons (Roger) of Keyser, WV; 25 grandkids: Nargess, Michael, Matthew, Jessica, JoAnn, Clarence, Chucky, Angie, Loren, Debbie, Kristen, Johnny, Steven, Shane, Ryan, Tyler, Chad, Jackie, Brittany, Bryant, Nick, Justin, Kaileigh, McKayla and Bellamy; and 27 great-grandchildren.

Gerald was a graduate of Keyser High School, class of 1952. And a graduate of Potomac State where he was a member of ROTC. He went on to serve honorably in the U.S Army as a Supply Sergeant in the Korean War. He was a hard worker, who held many jobs throughout his life, to include hauling apples from the apple orchard, the Farm Manager and taught agriculture at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, Farm Manager at the Pruntytown State Farm for the State of West Virginia, and the Farm Manager for Purdue Farms primary breeding and research facility. He retired from all 3 of his last employers.

Mr. Spiker was a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason and a member of the Shriners. He participated and ran many clubs and organizations over the years to include 4-H Club Leader in Princess Anne, Chairman of the Taylor County Fair Board, and taught hunter’s safety education. He was a beekeeper for many years, having one of the largest bee colonies in the area at one point. He sold honey and even rented out bees for pollination to other individuals. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, his dogs (especially all the many pugs he had over the years). Repairing electronics such as TV’s and old radios. Gerald loved spending time with his family, going shopping and on train rides. He loved getting together for meals, attending his grandchildren’s sporting events and sharing memories of his days playing sports.

Family and friends will be received at the Donald G. Ford Funeral Home 950 George Washington Highway Grafton, WV, on Friday, August 5, 2022 from 11am until the funeral hour at 1pm with Pastor James E. Johnson presiding.
